Yesterday's Children project to benefit Save the Children
Acclaimed British artist and Malibu resident David Ashwell (renowned for his striking paintings of the Malibu coast) painted this self portrait from a photograph taken 60 years ago. Recapturing that simple innocence of yesteryear gave him an extraordinary idea.
In January 2010, David embarked on an ambitious two-year project to “give back” using his remarkable artistic talents. He is painting a series of portraits of well known and/or successful people from photographs of themselves as children.
David will produce a book of these portraits called Yesterday's Children, and proceeds will benefit Save the Children, one of BritWeek’s 2010 beneficiaries. The original paintings and a limited edition of prints will also be auctioned to benefit the same cause. About the project, David says "It not only reminds us we were all children once, it raises our awareness of children who are desperately in need today."
Portraits of famous Brits already completed are below, and works in progress include portraits of Sir Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Sting. For more information on Yesterday's Children or to nominate a personality to take part in this unique project, contact David Ashwell.
