Psychedelic Furs
The Psychedelic Furs are prominent among the legendary "new wave" bands that emerged in the early 1980's. Led by singer and songwriter Richard Butler, along with bass playing brother Tim, the Furs won over fans and critics alike by combining poetic lyrics, innovative rhythms and melodies driven by an aggressive, punk desperation. Through it all, the band scored major hits with Love My Way, Pretty In Pink, Heaven, The Ghost In You and Heartbreak Beat, in all releasing seven studio albums, several compilations, a box set and a live DVD.

Scars On 45

Wednesday, May 4 • 8 pm • Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood

6801 Hollywood Blvd • Hollywood, CA 90028 • Free Concert

Scars on 45Danny Bemrose (vocals/guitar) • Stuart Nichols (bass) • David “Nova” Nowakowski (keyboards) • Aimee Driver (vocals) • Chris Durling (drums)

Making music was the furthest thing from Scars on 45 co-founder Danny Bemrose’s mind, until the professional soccer player for England’s Huddersfield Town F.C. broke his foot at 21 and his world came crashing down. "I was in limbo, without knowing what to do with myself," he says. Danny put down the soccer ball and picked up his father’s guitar. "I’m quite an obsessive person. I became kind of addicted," he says. "I used to lock myself away to write songs and record on four-track recorder." That led, in 2007, to the creation of Scars on 45, a quintet from Leeds, England, that combines the gentle melodic intensity of Snow Patrol or Keane with the added allure of co-ed vocals. Tension, often propelled by drummer Chris Durling’s insistent beat, builds throughout the songs as the emotional ante rises. Hearts are broken and seldom rendered whole again before new wounds pierce through.

In early 2010, the band signed a worldwide deal with Chop Shop/Atlantic Records. They recorded the self-produced Scars on 45 on their own, first starting in "Fawlty Towers," as Danny and Stu called their crumbling apartment, and then moving to the basement of a church that a friend had purchased to convert into apartments. Although enjoyable, the studio is "the work part," Danny says, whereas the real fun comes in playing live. "Just to be able to put yourself out there and let people know who you are is wonderful," he continues. "What I write about is who I am really. When people listen and react to one of your songs, there’s no better feeling."

The band's music has been featured on several television programs, including CSI: New York. In early 2011, Scars on 45 released a follow-up EP, entitled Give Me Something.

Taking it right back to the gritty dark places where their ideas came from, this album is an amalgamation of years of hard work and touring by all the members. Steve has written a solo album with members of Cornershop and Magnetic Fields, while Ben Harris and Paul Harris (whose DJ fans have included Kate Moss and Jade Jagger) have been producing and remixing non-stop.

Johnny Flynn

Wednesday, May 18 • 8 pm • The Echo

1822 West Sunset Blvd. • Los Angeles, CA 90026 • (213) 413-8200

Johnny FlynnEver since discovering a copy of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in a junk shop aged 13, Johnny Flynn has known what he wants to do with his life: to take off on a path of discovery, and write poetic, lyrical songs that document the journey. With his second album Been Listening, recorded in various spaces in London and at Bear Creek Studios outside Seattle, you can hear that spirit of searching, a voice of the outsider. Johnny Flynn has developed the song-writing maturity — equal parts resigned and hopeful— that was strongly present in his debut A Larum. While his first album was couched in an English folk style, Been Listening spreads its wings further.

Born in Johannesburg, Johnny grew up in Hampshire and South Wales. A classical music scholarship for his prodigious musicianship saw him through school, after which he headed for drama school in London, where he moonlighted as a fiddle player for his friend, the singer Emmy The Great, before striking off on his own.

Various acting jobs and a year with the Shakespearean theatre company Propeller followed. Now, backed by the critical acclaim and learning curve that A Larum gave him, Johnny Flynn is entering into a new level of song-writing maturity that recalls the accessibility and spiritual depth of an early 1970s Cat Stevens.

Alongside scoring A Bag Of Hammers, a forthcoming movie starring Rebecca Hall, and taking on the odd acting role, Johnny Flynn has funnelled everything from boyhood memories to feelings of loneliness into Been Listening to make a collection of songs that ring out with a wisdom beyond his years.

Echo & The Bunnymen

Saturday, May 21st • 8 pm • Club Nokia

Echo & The Bunnymen

The dark, swirling fusion of gloomy post-punk and Doors-inspired psychedelia brought Echo & the Bunnymen a handful of British hits in the early '80s, while attracting a cult following in the US. The Bunnymen grew out of the Crucial Three, a late-'70s trio featuring vocalist Ian McCulloch, Pete Wylie and Julian Cope. The latter two left the group by the end of 1977. In the summer of 1978, Ian McCulloch met guitarist Will Sergeant and began recording demos with a drum machine the duo called "Echo." Adding bassist Les Pattinson, the band made its live debut in Liverpool later than year as Echo & the Bunnymen.
